Since its inception in 1948, Silverstone, the iconic home of the Formula 1 Grand Prix, has undergone significant transformations. Over the past five years, the Northamptonshire site has nearly doubled in size with the addition of a museum, hotel, and luxury VIP accommodation. These expansions have necessitated substantial enhancements in infrastructure, including parking facilities and site management, to accommodate more than 1.2 million visitors annually. Furthermore, the site hosts over 40 events each year, ranging from major racing tournaments to corporate hospitality, conferences, and exhibitions.
Project Overview
Tektrans, in collaboration with their approved installation partner CVL Systems Ltd, worked closely with Silverstone’s senior technical team and site developers to deliver a fully integrated solution that addressed the following key objectives:
- ANPR for Site Management:
- Implemented highly accurate and reliable Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to facilitate site security, access control, and car park occupancy management.
- Traffic Reporting:
- Developed a reporting system for local authorities, providing detailed vehicle counts by hour to highlight the increase in traffic attributed to the new museum, hotel, and VIP accommodation.
- Created bespoke reports to better understand the impact on the surrounding highways infrastructure.
- Hospitality System Integration:
- Automated querying of the hospitality management system to create tailored access profiles and notifications, enhancing the hospitality experience for individual guests and VIPs.
- Intelligence and Alerting:
- Integrated intelligence and alerting capabilities to ensure optimal site management and security.
The Tektrans/Pulsare Overwatch Back Office played a crucial role in controlling authorised access for hundreds of staff and contractors, as well as thousands of racegoers and VIPs. The system also managed access to appropriate zones within Silverstone’s expanding perimeter.
In addition, a bespoke integration of Overwatch with onsite accommodation platforms was developed to provide accurate journey time analysis for several neighbouring local authorities, a critical factor for Silverstone’s operational planning.

The project required a sophisticated integration of multiple systems to ensure seamless operations across a rapidly expanding site. The challenge was not only to manage increased traffic and visitor numbers but also to provide detailed, actionable insights that could aid Silverstone’s future development plans, including their drive towards Net Zero.
